Home Power & Solar Batteries: Reuse and Recycling

Materials in a home power wall’s lithium-ion battery are recoverable and recyclable. Battery materials are refined and put into a cell, and will still remain in the cell at the end of their life, when they can be recycled to recover its valuable materials for reuse over and over again.

Extending the life of a battery pack is a superior option to recycling for environmental & sustainability reasons. For those reasons, before decommissioning a consumer battery pack and sending it for recycling, Recover does everything it can to extend the useful life of each battery pack. Any battery that is no longer meeting a customer’s needs can be inspected and hopefully serviced by Recover.

None of our scrapped lithium-ion batteries go to landfilling, and 100% are recycled.

Supporting the UK in Sustainable Home Energy & Solar Recycling

The UK is adopting green energy more than ever. The growth in demand for solar panels and lithium ion batteries has skyrocketed and continues to expand. The energy generated by solar panels alone increased over 2.5 times, from 7,509 MWp (megawatt peak) in 2015 to 19,221 MWp in 2020. The turn towards renewable energy sources is a leap forward in building a circular economy and a sustainable future.

The question is, how do we deal with the waste that green energy technologies create? What are your recycling options, and why should you recycle? Recover have a team of experts ready to help you recycle your home energy & solar system batteries.

Why you should recycle solar panels, batteries, and electronics?

Creating home energy systems, such as solar panels, batteries, and other electronic components, demands a significant allocation of resources, both in terms of energy and effort. Furthermore, these components often retain value even after their initial use within a system has ended. For instance, the metals found in solar panels and batteries can be recycled and repurposed, extending their utility even when the panels and batteries themselves have reached the end of their operational lives.

Disposing of electronic "waste" essentially forfeits the additional value that this waste could offer. Conversely, recycling such waste transforms materials that might otherwise become solid waste into valuable resources, which can serve as raw materials or construction components for the creation of new products.

By repurposing "waste" from items at the end of their useful life into resources for other products, we move closer to achieving closed-loop, sustainable energy and manufacturing solutions. This process brings us a step closer to establishing a circular economy.

Does home power system recycling reduce dependence on new resources?

Yes. Apart from extracting added value from already existing resources, the recycling of solar panels, lithium batteries, and other electronic components reduces our reliance on fresh resources. The processes of mining and metal production often result in substantial, predominantly adverse environmental consequences. Through the recycling of materials such as copper, silver, gold, palladium, and aluminum, we can further diminish the need for mining in future industrial and energy-related activities, thus lessening their environmental impact.

How are the solar panels recycled?

Solar panels are made up of glass, metal, and plastic — all of which can be used again once the panel has reached its end of life. Recycling solar panels starts with separating and isolating all the constituent components, including the special photovoltaic panel glass, aluminum frame, connection box, and connection cables.

The process begins by removing the aluminum frame and the electric modules and cables from the panel glass. The glass is then fed into a machine that cuts the panel into small pieces that are ground and sifted to remove any metal. An optical sorting system ensures that only pure glass remains at the end of the process.

Once recovered, all the materials can be sent to various industrial sectors:

Glass is used to create new glass
Aluminum frame is sent to an aluminum manufacturing plant
Plastics are used as fuel in cement production
Silicon wafers can be melted and used by specialty recycling companies
Cables and connectors are sold as copper scrap to be recycled

How to recycle lithium batteries from home solar equipment?

Much like the recycling process for solar panels, recycling lithium batteries entails the disassembly of their individual components. The battery cell itself undergoes shredding and separation until it transforms into a sludgy mixture known as "black mass," consisting of lithium, manganese, cobalt, and nickel. These metals are subsequently reclaimed from the black mass and refined for use in manufacturing new batteries. Additionally, the plastic from the battery can be repurposed in cement production, while any aluminum or copper can be sold and reused.

The recycling of lithium batteries typically involves five key steps:

  • Receiving and disassembling the batteries.
  • Extracting the cells from the battery module.
  • Shredding the cells with the aid of machinery.
  • Feeding the remaining materials into a separator to isolate paper and plastic, metal scraps, and the black mass.
  • Reusing these recovered materials in the production of new batteries or other industrial processes.

How to recycle electronic equipment like inverters?

Recycling electronic equipment encompasses the intricate process of separating and recovering materials from its various components. Electronics undergo disassembly and separation, which can be carried out either by automated machines or through manual methods. The individual parts are subsequently shredded into smaller pieces, with magnets employed to eliminate ferrous metals like steel. To further refine the separation, electronic currents, near-infrared light, and density separation techniques are utilized to remove other metals and plastics.

These reclaimed materials are then put to practical use. Mixed plastics, for instance, can replace aggregate in concrete or serve as fuel in concrete production. Sorted plastics can be recycled into pellets for extrusion or incorporated into pellets for new products. As for metals, they are extracted, graded, and sent to a smelter for recovery and reuse.

Given that many electronic devices contain hazardous and potentially harmful substances, their proper recycling is of paramount importance to prevent environmental damage. Take fluorescent and mercury lamps, for example; they can be disassembled and repurposed to avoid contributing to landfills. The components of these lamps are crushed and separated into glass, metal, and phosphor powder. The metal and glass are sold and repurposed, while the phosphor powder undergoes distillation to recover mercury, which can then be reused.

Why should you recycle your batteries as opposed to dispose of them?

Recover recognizes that customers who have adopted solar energy solutions tend to have strong environmental values. To construct a sustainable future, we must not solely base our decisions on economic considerations. Recycling, for instance, may entail higher costs. As an illustration, disposing of solar panels in a landfill costs only about one pound, whereas recycling them costs around 20 pounds. This prompts the question: Why should we prioritize recycling?

Our aim is to ensure that our customers' expectations are not only met but exceeded. The answer to why we should recycle lies in its alignment with moral, ethical, and environmental principles, and potentially even legal obligations. By choosing to discard your solar panels in a landfill at the end of their lifespan, you inadvertently contribute to pollution, exacerbate the strain on finite resources, and counteract some of the positive impacts of transitioning to solar energy.

Recycling, recovery, beneficial reuse, and waste-to-energy methods are the strategies that will propel us towards a circular economy. Neglecting these methods now may result in immediate regulatory penalties and much more substantial, severe costs for the planet in the long term.

Important to note.

  1. Recover mandates the removal and disconnection of batteries and any other components from electrical circuits. It’s important to note that our logistics team does not possess electrical expertise and, as such, cannot assist with the disassembly of live systems.
  2. In the event of any battery damage, such as visible swelling, smoking, or heat-related issues, it is imperative to communicate these issues in advance of the collection. This allows a member of our team to provide guidance on safe storage and prepare our specialized collection team accordingly.
  3. Please be aware that Recover is unable to offer precise payment offers until a thorough inspection of the battery units has been conducted. Instead, we offer a pricing structure that includes both best and worst-case payout scenarios, an estimated payout range.
  4. If you find the final total unsatisfactory, we are prepared to provide detailed reports justifying our offer. Furthermore, customers have the option to reclaim battery packs (collection arrangements need to be made by the customer).
