Creating home energy systems, such as solar panels, batteries, and other electronic components, demands a significant allocation of resources, both in terms of energy and effort. Furthermore, these components often retain value even after their initial use within a system has ended. For instance, the metals found in solar panels and batteries can be recycled and repurposed, extending their utility even when the panels and batteries themselves have reached the end of their operational lives.

Disposing of electronic "waste" essentially forfeits the additional value that this waste could offer. Conversely, recycling such waste transforms materials that might otherwise become solid waste into valuable resources, which can serve as raw materials or construction components for the creation of new products.

How are the solar panels recycled?

Solar panels are made up of glass, metal, and plastic — all of which can be used again once the panel has reached its end of life. Recycling solar panels starts with separating and isolating all the constituent components, including the special photovoltaic panel glass, aluminum frame, connection box, and connection cables.


The process begins by removing the aluminum frame and the electric modules and cables from the panel glass. The glass is then fed into a machine that cuts the panel into small pieces that are ground and sifted to remove any metal. An optical sorting system ensures that only pure glass remains at the end of the process.

Once recovered, all the materials can be sent to various industrial sectors:

Glass is used to create new glass
Aluminum frame is sent to an aluminum manufacturing plant
Plastics are used as fuel in cement production
Silicon wafers can be melted and used by specialty recycling companies
Cables and connectors are sold as copper scrap to be recycled

How to recycle lithium batteries from home solar equipment?

Much like the recycling process for solar panels, recycling lithium batteries entails the disassembly of their individual components. The battery cell itself undergoes shredding and separation until it transforms into a sludgy mixture known as "black mass," consisting of lithium, manganese, cobalt, and nickel. These metals are subsequently reclaimed from the black mass and refined for use in manufacturing new batteries. Additionally, the plastic from the battery can be repurposed in cement production, while any aluminum or copper can be sold and reused.

The recycling of lithium batteries typically involves five key steps:

  • Receiving and disassembling the batteries.
  • Extracting the cells from the battery module.
  • Shredding the cells with the aid of machinery.
  • Feeding the remaining materials into a separator to isolate paper and plastic, metal scraps, and the black mass.
  • Reusing these recovered materials in the production of new batteries or other industrial processes.

How to recycle electronic equipment like inverters?

Recycling electronic equipment encompasses the intricate process of separating and recovering materials from its various components. Electronics undergo disassembly and separation, which can be carried out either by automated machines or through manual methods. The individual parts are subsequently shredded into smaller pieces, with magnets employed to eliminate ferrous metals like steel. To further refine the separation, electronic currents, near-infrared light, and density separation techniques are utilized to remove other metals and plastics.

These reclaimed materials are then put to practical use. Mixed plastics, for instance, can replace aggregate in concrete or serve as fuel in concrete production. Sorted plastics can be recycled into pellets for extrusion or incorporated into pellets for new products. As for metals, they are extracted, graded, and sent to a smelter for recovery and reuse.

Given that many electronic devices contain hazardous and potentially harmful substances, their proper recycling is of paramount importance to prevent environmental damage. Take fluorescent and mercury lamps, for example; they can be disassembled and repurposed to avoid contributing to landfills. The components of these lamps are crushed and separated into glass, metal, and phosphor powder. The metal and glass are sold and repurposed, while the phosphor powder undergoes distillation to recover mercury, which can then be reused.
